Where I live it’s mighty cold during this time of the year and every minute outside can be a challenge. Still, one can attempt to defy the weather gods with four layers of clothes, a flask of warming fluid in the coat pocket and treating freezing ears with this kick-ass playlist.

Julian Casablancas- Phrazes for The Young

Earlier this week Julian Casablancas, front man of The Strokes, released his first solo album Phrazes for The Young . Today it was added to the Spotify catalogue.

Casablancas has always been the main songwriter of The Strokes but this is the first time he’s left the rest of the gang to record an album of his own. Of Course, the album has a kind of Strokes feeling to it but certainly comes with a personal touch. And I have to say that it sounds pretty great. The opening track Out of the Blue is my favorite so far but Phrazes for The Young offers a lot more. I think it’s safe to say that the first single 11th Dimension will fill a lot of dance floors in the next couple of months.

P.S. Julian Casablancas isn’t the first member of The Strokes to go of on a solo adventure, Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has had a lot of success with his two albums:
Yours to Keep (2006) ( on which Casablancas both played bass and sang back-up vocals)

Mothers, mamas and mothers-in- law; everybody from Merle Haggard to LL Cool J has at least one of them. The two artists have more in common, as they were both featured in the second episode of Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour. Here’s the playlist of the tracks from the show. Some songs are still missing from Spotify but who knows, in time they might be added to.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros released their debut album Up From Below in July of this year. In August, Rolling Stone Magazine listed them as a band to keep an ear out for in 2009. Since then, they have been getting a lot of attention, for instance, with an appearance on Letterman in September. Up from below is certainly a strong debut and it deserves all the cred it’s been getting. The first single , 40 Day Dream, ia a glimpse of Californian sunshine that can turn even the gloomiest of autumn days around.

P.S. I haven’t had the pleasure yet, but it seems like a live show could be well worth the money. Check out these clips:

Talking about the weather; a popular activity in many cultures. A topic often used to kick off a conversation and to brake the ice (no pun intended). Back in 2006, Bob Dylan kicked off his radio show on XM Radio by doing just this; talking about the weather. Here’s a playlist of the songs from the show. Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour; dreams, schemes and themes. Ah, just the sound of it…mmm!

If you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to any of Bob Dylan’s radio shows on xmradio.com I strongly recommend, no, implore you to check it out. After doing so, you are probably going to be wandering; how will I get a hold of those lovely tunes Mr. Dylan just played for me?

You don´t have to look far to at least get some of them. Two compilations of songs featured on the show are available on Spotify. There are some real beauties to be found here: Chuck Berry’s No Money Down, Blind Willie Johnson’s John The Revelator, Bessie Smith’s Send me to the L’ectric Chair, Screamin Jay Hawkins’s version of I Put A Spell On You, Just Walking In The Rain by The Prisonaires and Bad Luck Blues by Guitar Slim to name a few. Madness are perhaps most known for their 80’s hit Our House and for the the ska classic One Step Beyond. A couple of days ago I stumbled upon a record of theirs which is of more recent times; The Liberty of Norton Folgate, which was released earlier this year. It’s really growing on me. Check out Idiot Child, That Close, Africa, and of course the title song.

Bob Dylan’s Christmas In The Heart is to be released on October the second. The official track list has not been released yet but www.dreamtimepodcast.com/ has found a German site where a possible list is published. They are mostly holliday classics and I have gathered earlier recordings of the songs here. Note that Dylan’s producer alias Jack Frost figures in the first lines of The Christmas Song, “…jack frost nipping at your nose.”
